Interstellar Boats

Lately

Posted on

I'm moving ever closer to copying Tom MacWright fully now. But "Lately" can be my parallel to his "Recently", in this years attempt to avoid at least copying the name. A small improvement over the "now" of yester-year . Still a great way to get writing happening, so going to keep up copying the practice.

(I believe he wrote about the logic of it somewhere, basically the keep blog looking alive and updated as well as being a good way to keep writing consistently, but I cannot find the specific post detailing this. I'll update here later if I can find it.)

Creating

Primarily focused on turning this empty box into a place to live. I moved apartments at the end of last year and left for the holidays with an apartment in cardboard boxes piled along a wall.

Jacob Geller released a fun video essay The Future is an Empty Room. As usual, a banger of a video. This time (for me) exceptionally timely.

Upon return I've assembled furniture, and re-arranged ravenously. Every piece moved multiple times until they've landed in what will probably be their spot for the next year or so. My goal is for this place to feel like more than a single box I everything (verb) in.

I also wrote a post for myself on how I setup the proxy for my Minecraft server. Check it out if you missed it or have a use for something similar, but it's mostly a quick re-setup guide for myself. So far it's been worked great for a month that's been fairly light on crafting.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

Re-watched the first season over the last month, will be picking up each of these new episodes as it airs. I've avoided spoilers, trailers and almost all discussion of the new season (altho the meme of that one frame has not gone entirely unnoticed).

So far two episodes in: I'm enjoying it.

Mistborn

Began the first novel in the series, intending on reading this on the metro at least once a week. Unfortunately been working on the ride to work more often than not, but have been enjoying some music on the rides back to balance it out.

Either way, with the snow there's been some down time. It is the most interesting and thorough introduction to a world I think I've ever read. To put it dryly, without everything being over explained, and only a small amount being explained at all, I have a solid understanding of whats happening and am absolutely hooked.

Solar Panels by Technology Connections

Full title at time of writing being: "You are being misled about renewable energy technology."

Notable for I think coining the term "disposable energy", or at least hopefully popularizing it in the context of power generation. This term, along with the rest of the video, really clarifies the "one time use" of gasoline (and anything that is burned for power). It seems so obvious to me that whether for the grid or for personal use is, the reasonable power source to build is something you don't burn a single time and then have to restock on.

Everything else about the video is also fantastic, as the Technology Connections videos usually are, and I highly recommend watching it all the way through.

Considering

I've been buying many things used as part of my move, and have gone to many 2nd hand shops in the process. These shops tend to have somewhere between a good and great book section, but I am very forgetful about what exactly I have. In these scenarios I've aired on the side of caution, so have avoided dupes, but i have certainly passed up on books that I did not have a copy of.

So! as part of unpacking my small collection, I took a bit of extra time to write up a list of the library. And, it might as well be public so feel free to check out the library. It'll certainly be updated over time, and I think I should have a separate section for "read but from library, so don't own copy", as several books I loved don't have a listing, while several that I haven't been able to make my way through have made the list.
